Delta Ministry of Culture and Tourism, celebrates World Day for Cultural Diversity and Dialogue
The Delta State Ministry of Culture and Tourism, marks the first ever ‘World Day for Cultural Diversity and Dialogue with the theme Cultural Diversity and Development.’
This event, which takes place every 21st of May, aims to emphasize the richness of the world’s cultures and the important role of intercultural dialogue in achieving peace and sustainable development.
The celebration highlighted the significance of cultural diversity in promoting peace and sustainable development. It emphasized the need for understanding and accepting different cultures and beliefs to foster harmony and growth within communities and organizations.
In his welcome address, the Commissioner of Culture and Tourism, Dr. Darlington Nnamdi Ijeh, represented by Mr. Nwabeze Kennedy, the Director of Administration, emphasized the essence of cultural diversity. He highlighted the significance of unity, skill development and good conduct within diverse communities.
Mr Kennedy stressed that cultural diversity entails respecting and acknowledging the differences in beliefs, behaviours, skills, dances, interests, food and needs among people.
A paper presented by guest speaker Mrs Fadairo Esther Uzochikwa from the Federal College of Technology, Asaba, underscored the importance of cultural diversity for sustainable development and peace. She emphasized the need for understanding and accepting cultural differences to foster harmony and achieve common goals.
Mrs Uzochikwa urged citizens to embrace all cultures without discrimination, emphasizing that cultural diversity promotes the publicity of different cultures and contributes to societal growth and stability.
The event saw participation from students representing various schools, both public and private, including Marble Hill School, Government Model Secondary School Asaba, Women Affairs Secondary School, and Westend Secondary School. The celebration was enriched with a cultural interlude by the Delta State Art Council Troupe.
In his closing remarks, Mr Friday Anazia, the Director of Culture and Tourism, expressed gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for Delta State’s inaugural participation in the World Day of Cultural Diversity and Dialogue. He commended all stakeholders and participants for contributing to the success of the celebration, emphasizing the importance of recognizing cultural diversity in workplaces, schools, and religious spaces for societal harmony and development.
